Tooth Extraction & Bone Graft

Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved — whether due to severe decay, infection, fracture, or crowding. At New York Dental Group, we perform gentle extractions and, when appropriate, bone grafts to preserve your jawbone and set the stage for future implant placement.

When Is an Extraction Necessary?

The Extraction Process

We take every step to ensure your comfort. The area is thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia before the procedure begins. Most extractions are straightforward and take just a few minutes. You'll feel pressure but no pain. After the tooth is removed, we'll discuss your replacement options.

We always explore every option to save a tooth before recommending extraction. Tooth preservation is always our first priority.

Why a Bone Graft?

When a tooth is removed, the surrounding jawbone begins to shrink within weeks — a process called resorption. Placing a bone graft at the time of extraction preserves the bone volume needed for a future dental implant.

Without a graft, significant bone loss can occur, making implant placement more complicated (or requiring a larger graft later). Placing the graft immediately after extraction is the most efficient and cost-effective approach.

Recovery

1

Day 1

Rest, apply ice packs, and keep gauze on the extraction site. Avoid rinsing, spitting, or straws.

2

Days 2–3

Mild swelling and soreness are normal. Soft foods only. Take prescribed or OTC pain relievers as directed.

3

Week 1

Swelling subsides. Begin gentle rinsing with warm salt water. Most patients return to normal activity.

4

Healing

The bone graft integrates over 3–6 months, after which implant placement can typically proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the extraction be painful?
The area is completely numbed so you won't feel pain during the procedure — only pressure. Post-procedure discomfort is typically manageable with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
Do I need a bone graft with every extraction?
Not necessarily. A bone graft is most recommended when you plan to replace the tooth with an implant, or when significant bone loss is anticipated. Dr. Im will advise you based on your specific situation.
What can I eat after an extraction?
Stick to soft foods for the first few days — yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, smoothies (no straws). Avoid hard, crunchy, or chewy foods until healing is well underway.
