Dental Fillings

Modern dental fillings are virtually invisible and extremely durable. At New York Dental Group, we use tooth-colored composite resin to restore decayed or damaged teeth — no silver, no mercury, just a seamless match to your natural smile.

Composite vs. Amalgam

Traditional silver (amalgam) fillings have been used for decades, but they require removing more healthy tooth structure, expand and contract with temperature changes, and are highly visible. We use composite resin fillings that bond directly to your tooth, require minimal removal of healthy enamel, and blend invisibly with your natural shade.

Signs You May Need a Filling

The Filling Process

1

Numbing

We apply a local anesthetic so you feel nothing during the procedure.

2

Decay Removal

The decayed portion of the tooth is carefully removed, preserving as much healthy structure as possible.

3

Bonding & Filling

The composite resin is placed in layers, shaped to your bite, and hardened with a curing light.

4

Polish & Check Bite

We smooth and polish the filling and ensure your bite feels natural.

How Long Do Fillings Last?

With proper care, composite fillings typically last 7–15 years. Regular check-ups allow us to catch wear before a small issue becomes a larger one requiring a crown.

Most fillings are completed in a single appointment lasting 30–60 minutes. You can eat normally once the numbness wears off — usually within 1–2 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my filling be noticeable?
No. We carefully match the composite resin shade to your natural tooth color. Most people cannot tell the difference between a composite filling and a natural tooth.
Does getting a filling hurt?
We ensure the area is fully numb before starting. You may feel mild pressure but no pain. Some sensitivity is normal for a few days after the procedure.
Can old silver fillings be replaced?
Yes. Many patients choose to replace their amalgam fillings with tooth-colored composite for cosmetic reasons or when the old filling shows signs of wear or cracking.
